Security

The last few years have marked a considerable rise in the e-commerce market. Now, more than ever, people elect the convenience of shopping from the comfort of their own home as opposed to fighting crowds and long lines at the store. Amazon, for instance, shipped an astounding 5 billion Prime packages in 2017.

However, this has also created a new avenue for criminals. It’s now easier than ever for criminals to steal from you. When a package is delivered to your home, it will sit on your front porch or doorstep until someone retrieves it. Ideally, that “someone” would be you, but this is not always the case. Approximately 30% of Americans say that they have had a package stolen from their premises. Below, you’ll find ways in which you can prevent porch pirate theft.

Choose An Alternate Shipping Destination

If you are someone who works throughout the day and knows that packages will be left unattended, one of the options you have is to ship to a destination other than your home. Your choices for doing so include:

Your place of business

A secure location, such as an Amazon Locker or UPS Access Point

A neighbor’s house

However, the problem with all of these is that they are incredibly inconvenient. If you ship to your place of business, you are going to have to lug the packages home with you daily. This can be especially troublesome during the holiday season when you could be ordering gifts for the entire family. If you have to pick up the package from another location, you’ll need to spend time going out of your way to get the package. Your time is more valuable than that.

Customize The Delivery

You also have the option of leaving delivery instructions for the shipping company. For example, you could instruct your delivery driver to leave the package in a place such as the back porch, or you can choose a delivery date and time to ensure that you’ll be home. However, these too can prove to be unreliable and inconsistent. It’s no guarantee that the company will follow your directions.

Create A Buddy System

You could choose to enter a “Buddy System” with your neighbors. You could all enter a pact, telling each other that you’ll pick up each other’s packages when you see one on the porch. However, you’ll need to ensure that you can trust your neighbors before doing so.

Invest In A Home Security System

The most full-proof message to prevent porch pirate theft is to invest in a homes security system. You can install a doorbell camera or surveillance camera that is motion activated. When someone approaches your door, you’ll receive an alert on your phone that allows you to view who is at the door and speak with them.

If a thief hears a voice coming from the door, there’s an excellent chance that they’ll drop your package and run. But, if they steal your package anyway, their face will be captured on film so that you can report them to the Police. You could also consider syncing the motion sensors to an alarm system.

A home security system is the most reliable and convenient way to prevent porch pirate theft. It’s your home, and you shouldn’t have to deliver packages to a different area just because your home isn’t protected. If you’re a homeowner be sure to contact a local security company to protect your packages and home.
